Find the Susquehanna

The noble Susquehanna with its water strong and slow
Tears the skin of every mountain it runs through
If you let yourself be loved and knew that love was like a river
What else would you expect your skin to do
The noble Susquehanna with its waters newly warmed
By heat it stole from sunlight it reflects
Will still pull down lost children even when the skies were clear
Like they were the night I let you kiss my neck
The noble Susquehanna with its waters often gentle
Will sometimes let you rest against its stones
I thought you might’ve wandered there to bathe or to be baptized
After sunset while I waited up alone
If the Susquehanna seeks to drown me in the valley
And leave my body broken in the sun
I will lay my whole self limp and let the water have its way with me
And pray that I am not the only one

I’ve been trying to explain
To strangers why my name
Is something I’d replace
And you gave your heart so true
To hands so hard and cruel
How could eyes so blind even know to love you too?
I will run into a fire
And maybe last the night
Or maybe burn alive
And they’ll build monuments to tell
Just where the bodies fell
But what was dying worth if piles of stones are all that’s left?
I've been trying to explain
To strangers why my name
Is something I'd replace
